Thomas Vermaelen reveals his expectations of Arsenal under Unai Emery this season

Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has said that he expects Arsenal to do better this season than they did last year.

The Gunners added six new players during the transfer window, including Nicolas Pepe and David Luiz, with the aim of reclaiming a top four finish at the end of the season.

Arsenal currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League table, having picked up seven points from their opening four games, the only loss coming against League leaders Liverpool.

Vermaelen, who played 150 games for Arsenal between the years of 2009 and 2014, believes that Unai Emery has used the summer window to good effect.

"City and Liverpool look very strong like last year. But I think Arsenal improved as well with the players that they got, they did a good job in the transfer market," he said (via football Daily .)

"I always expect a lot from Arsenal and I really hope they do well, so we will see in the next 14 months."

The summer transfer window didn't only involve incomings at Arsenal though, with 11 players leaving the club during the window, and while Vermaelen admits that a lot of change can bring about some difficulty, the Belgian also believes that it could have a positive impact on the club this season.

Arsene Wenger not ruling out leading a team at next World Cup

"A new Arsenal, but that doesn't mean it's going to be worse," he said when asked about the changes over the summer.

"It's going to be difficult of course, a few players need to adapt, but I think there is a good manager there who wants to play football and do well for the club. I still expect Arsenal to do better than last year. "
