Thomas Tuchel slammed for making Chelsea star 'completely useless' with tactical set-up

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic was made "completely useless" by Thomas Tuchel's tactical decision in the Blues' 0-0 draw against Leeds United on Saturday.

That is the opinion of former France and Chelsea defender Frank Lebeouf, who believes that Pulisic's position made it difficult for the American international to get involved.

Pulisic has struggled for game time under Tuchel and there have been suggestions that he could be sold in the summer transfer window.

The Leeds draw was only Pulisic's second start since Tuchel arrived in January - the other coming in the FA Cup win over Barnsley - and in the brief moments he has been given, Pulisic has underwhelmed after an encouraging first season at the club.

Tuchel's back-three-based system does not use natural wingers, which certainly hinders where Pulisic can be played, as was the case on Saturday.

Tuchel used Pulisic at right wing-back, having previously featured Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi, another young wide attacker, in the position.

It is certainly not the first position you would think of as being Pulisic's best-suited, and Lebeouf believes that the selection made it difficult for the 22-year-old.

"It was interesting to see Pulisic," he told ESPN FC. "But he played on the right which I think is the wrong side because he’s mostly a guy who can start the action from the left, being right-footed.

"[On the left], he can get add pace into the game and shoot with his right foot — then maybe you can find him useful.

"But on the right, he’s completely useless for me, and he didn’t show more because of that position, except for giving crosses.

"I’m very disappointed with the way they [Chelsea attackers] played. For me, the [actions in the] last third of the pitch was horrendous from Chelsea."

Tuchel knows Pulisic well, however. After all, he was the first senior manager to give Pulisic a regular run of appearances for a first-team when the pair worked together at Borussia Dortmund.

Pulisic first became a first-team regular under Tuchel at Dortmund in the 2016/17 season, with the young winger making 43 appearances in all competitions that season.

However, many of those came off the right flank and it remains to be seen where Tuchel believes he will best slot into the Chelsea team.

Pulisic has mostly impressed since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, especially in the closing weeks of last season, but he will be eager to forge a first-team role for himself now Tuchel has taken over the reins.
