Thomas Tuchel makes dressing room admission after Chelsea secured top four spot

Thomas Tuchel insisted there were no dressing room celebrations after admitting Chelsea got “lucky” after sneaking into the top four.

Tuchel has also been left sweating on Edouard Mendy’s fitness ahead of the Champions League final after the keeper went off at half time after damaging ribs colliding into the goal post.

Chelsea boss Tuchel said he knew before the end of the game their bitter rivals Tottenham had done them a massive favour by winning at Leicester.

But Tuchel said: “We are lucky Tottenham did the job for us today. We came to win and put any doubts to the side and that was not possible for us.

“But we were in the position where it was possible to end in top four with a defeat, that was because of the team’s hard work and consistently good results.

Thomas Tuchel admitted Chelsea's players did not celebrate in the dressing room (PA)

“But there are no celebrations in the dressing room. It's quiet. We did not win, we are lucky again and are happy Tottenham did the job for us.

"We had a lack of composure and determination and decision making. We have a lot of players upfront and improving to do with the young players in the last third of the game.

“It was clear we are through. The game in Leicester was over a bit earlier. I knew three or four minutes before our game was over. That was the main target.

“This was the story this season. We created a lot of chances, half chances, many deliveries, but we are young team. We try to evolve and make them better and learn from every game and overcome this lack of precision.”

But Tuchel is concerned about Mendy as he will have a scan on Monday having had to go off at half time to be replaced by back-up keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Tuchel added: “He fell on the frame of the net. He has big pain in his ribs. We need to wait. Do some images and have an update tomorrow [Monday]. We have a week to prepare and will see if it is possible and if it is possible do all we can to see he is involved on Saturday.”
