Thomas Tuchel issues Fikayo Tomori statement after defender admits not talking to Chelsea boss

It remains to be seen whether Fikayo Tomori has a Chelsea future or not.

The young defender enjoyed a fine breakthrough season with the Blues in 2019/20, playing 22 times under Frank Lampard's tutelage.

With the signing of Thiago Silva and the re-emergence of Antonio Rudiger, however, he found chances harder to come by the season and went out on loan for the season to AC Milan.

Since arriving at the San Siro, he has played in every match for his new club, bar the one they played the day after he joined them and has impressed in Serie A.

Tuchel's start, Chelsea's best XI and the key to Timo Werner

In an interview with Sky Sports, Tomori opened up on his early days in Italy and also spoke aout new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel,. who replaced Frank Lampard at the helm days after Tomori left for Italy.

Tomori admitted he has not spoken to the new head coach, but that he did not think that was a problem.

Responding to a question about whether he had spoken to him, Tomori said: "No, I haven't but for him coming into a new job like this he's pretty much focused on the team and that's fine.

"He's a manager coming into a big team and it would be really difficult to go and message everyone, so he has to focus on the team and that's fair enough and they're doing well."

Tuchel was asked about Tomori's comments during his pre-match press conference ahead of the game with Southampton on Saturday.

And he explained his stance.

"To be honest, I did not spend too many minutes thinking about him," he admitted. "Every minute I spend here is for the guys here.

"It is tradition at Chelsea that many players are on loan. We will have this talk in the next weeks and months about the guys who are on loan but I have a general impression of Tomori which means he has, of course, high potential."
