Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has a major decision to make over the future of Blues defender Matt Miazga next season.
The American spent last season away from Stamford Bridge with Anderlecht.
It was reported that the Belgian giants already had plans to extend the defender’s stay with the club heading into next season.
However, due to his cost, they have now moved onto other targets for next season, leaving Miazga to return to Stamford Bridge as initially reported by Het Laatste Nieuws.
It leaves Chelsea boss Tuchel with a decision to make over the future of the centre-back.
Now 25, the American joined from MLS outfit New York Red Bulls in January 2016.
Miazga was afforded two Premier League outings in his debut campaign but has not been seen in a Chelsea shirt since.
He has had temporary spells with Vitesse Arnhem, Nantes, Reading and then Anderlecht, racking up 156 appearances away from Stamford Bridge.
The 22-capped defender now has just one year remaining on his contract in west London and it remains to be seen whether he will be kept around or again sent out on loan. With the likes of Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to get beyond, the former seems unlikely.
Ahead of joining Anderlecht, Miazga suggested that he was seeking a permanent departure away from Chelsea but was kept at the club and then joined the Belgian's on-loan.
He said: “Yeah, it was a consideration to get a permanent move, and there were options for permanent moves, but with this whole COVID situation and the market being what it was...
“There are a lot more details that go into a permanent [transfer], and at the time it just didn’t work out for whatever reason.
“But I spoke with the hierarchy at Chelsea, and they still believe in me.”
