Thomas Tuchel may have surprised a few people with his team selection to face Villareal.
Trevoh Chalobah has featured throughout pre-season but has been widely expected to leave on loan and wasn't even on the initial UEFA squad list for this evening's clash.
Nevertheless, he starts ahead of the likes of Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva as the Blues look to lift another European trophy.
Many of Chelsea's stars have had to make do with a truncated pre-season following EURO 2020 and the Copa America with Thiago Silva, Mason Mount, Reece James, Emerson Palmieri and Jorginho all reaching the final of the competitions.
Many see the Super Cup as simply a reward for winning the Champions League, but Tuchel is not one to bring sentimentality into his decisions.
Only five of the players who started against Manchester City in May - Edouard Mendy, Antonio Rudiger, N'Golo Kante, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner - started against Villareal tonight.
Ahead of the game, Tuchel addressed the team news and the absentees: “Of course, we take any match seriously because it’s what we demand of ourselves.
"We set certain standards for ourselves and it’s good to know because it gives us the attitude we need to give us the chance of a result.
"I hope it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s the European final or the first match of the Premier League. These are competitive matches and we’re here to compete for the win and for the trophy.
“We gave a lot of thought into it [the team selection], and in the end I stopped and thought, no we do the same as we did against Tottenham because first of all, we were happy with the first 60 minutes. The guys have already played a few pre-season friendly matches.
"We have a lot of guys in training, who had an in-house match for 45 minutes but didn’t have the shirt on after the Euros and so we said, no, this is a competitive match. We do not break our head now with minutes and how much can anybody play and do they need to share 90 minutes? No, we went for the team who played against Tottenham."
