Thomas Tuchel desperate to close gap on Man City as Trevoh Chalobah stars in Chelsea win

Here is your Chelsea morning digest for Sunday, August 15.

Chalobah stars in win

Chelsea youngster Trevoh Chalobah starred in the Blues' Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, netting the final goal of the game as the west London side defeated the Eagles 3-0 in what was an extremely convincing performance from the reigning champions of Europe.

Thomas Tuchel's side opened the scoring in the 27th minute through Spanish wing-back Marcus Alonso, who fired in a sublime free-kick before American winger Christian Pulisic doubled their advantage 13 minutes later.

The aforementioned Chalobah then marked his Premier League debut in style, rounding off the scoring with an excellent low-drive before the hour mark.

Tuchel wants to close gap

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel was happy with how his side performed in their convincing victory but emphasised the need for consistency if the west London club are to win the title this season.

"We said during the last campaign that we set the bar high and we try to close gaps in the 90 minutes. This is the Premier League, the toughest competition and it is on us, I truly believe we are in the role of the hunters to close the gap to Liverpool, City and United.

"We have to do this week in, week out. We are not shy to say this out loud that we try to be the best in any competition that we play. There are three teams to close the gap to."

Lukaku praise

Chelsea's new £98million frontman Romelu Lukaku congratulated his teammates after their victory over the Eagles.

"Well done boys! Good start!" Lukaku wrote on Twitter.

And Tuchel gave an update on when Lukaku would be available to play, admitting that the 28-year-old will feature next Sunday as the Blues' travel to north London to play Arsenal.

"We were not fast enough so that he could play on Wednesday or tomorrow," Tuchel explained when asked about the Belgian's availability.

"Romelu is still on quarantine and following the protocols. He will be out on Monday and undertake training with us next week. He will play for us against Arsenal. This is the plan."
