Thomas Tuchel delivers update on Chelsea contract extension as Real Madrid announce squad

Here is your Chelsea morning digest on Wednesday, May 5.

Tuchel's 12-word response to contract question

Thomas Tuchel has insisted there is no need for Chelsea to open talks with him over a possible contract extension before the season concludes.

Tuchel was appointed as Frank Lampard 's successor at the end of January, but only signed an 18-month deal with the Blues.

The German coach's start to life at Stamford Bridge has been excellent, with a potential FA Cup and Champions League double still on the cards.

However, when pressed on his contract extension, the former Paris Saint-Germain boss said: "No [nothing has taken place]. There is no time and no need for this right now."

Madrid announce squad for Chelsea showdown

Real Madrid have confirmed their squad for their Champions League semi-final second-leg against Chelsea.

Raphael Varane, Lucas Vazquez and Dani Carvajal are all sidelined for the showdown against the Blues, with the latter two expected to miss the remainder of the season.

However, Los Blancos have some welcomed boosts, with Sergio Ramos and Ferland Mendy both included in the squad following their injury problems.

Ramos has been sidelined since the end of March with a muscular issue, while Mendy has been out since midway through last month with a calf problem.

The seven Chelsea untouchables

Chelsea have seven untouchables in their squad ahead of their Champions League clash with Real Madrid this evening.

Edouard Mendy has established himself as Tuchel's number one goalkeeper during his time with the Blues and is almost certainly set to start at Stamford Bridge.

Defenders Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger have all been brilliant under the German coach.

N'Golo Kante was superb in the first-leg of the clash, but his history with muscular injuries means his workload has to be carefully managed by Tuchel.

The 30-year-old was handed a well deserved rest for the weekend's win over Fulham and looks set to start against Madrid.

Jorginho and Mason Mount, like Kante, have performed so well recently that the midfield duo have made themselves virtually undroppable under Tuchel.

The latter, Mount, has incredible durability - and has featured over 200 times for club and country since the start of the 2017/18 season.

Just as the 22-year-old was under Lampard, he is a crucial part of Tuchel's side.
