Thomas Tuchel calls for football to be stopped and questions Chelsea no-show procedure

Thomas Tuchel called for football to be stopped and questioned whether Chelsea will even turn up at Brentford in the Carabao Cup if they are forced to play again.

Chelsea boss Tuchel spoke out following his side’s 0-0 draw at Wolves after Blues failed to persuade the Premier League to postpone the fixture.

Tuchel said Chelsea wanted the game called off because of seven positive Covid cases among his playing squad.

He suggested they could take even stronger action if a Premier League meeting on Monday fails to pause the schedule amid a surge in the Omicron variant.

The German fumed: “It will hopefully stop but it’s more or less hoping. There is nothing else to do.

“If we have the next test and the next positive I would like to speak to the people from the Premier League what they expect.

“Shall we stop and not arrive in the next game if we are made to play?

“When they make us play against Brentford shall we not arrive?

“Shall we not train anymore? What shall we do?

"I don't care so much about the next games I just care about the next tests and the health of the players.

“We were just worried about the safety of players and the players were concerned about their health.

“The Premier League had an opinion and we had a different opinion so we agree to disagree.”

Chelsea had just six players on the bench at Wolves, including two goalkeepers.

Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku were all self-isolating having tested positive for Covid-19 in midweek.

Chelsea were also without Jorginho , Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kai Havertz at Molineux.

It meant Tuchel claimed he had to select Trevoh Chalobah, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante despite the trio not being fully ready.

He added: “I understand people will say they still have 14 players but look a bit more into detail.

"Trevoh Chalobah with two training sessions, Mateo Kovacic had one training session and N’Golo Kante one training session.

“We were putting a huge risk on the healthy and safety of the players, physically and from Covid.”
