Thomas the Tank Engine steams into Bury's East Lancashire Railway this May bank holiday weekend

TV favourite Thomas the Tank Engine is back at the East Lancashire Railway this weekend for the popular Day Out with Thomas event.

The family day out includes rides on Thomas, the chance to meet the Fat Controller and performances from Rusty and Dusty, Sodor's cheeky station sweepers.

There are also magic shows, circus workshops, face painting and Thomas-themed activities in the Imagination Station, including, tabletop games, colouring, Thomas films and re-enactments of classic Thomas stories.

It's a hugely popular event among young fans of the show and also gives families unlimited travel on steam and diesel trains along 12 miles of track through the stunning Irwell Valley.

Rides are running across this bank holiday weekend and tickets cost £12 for children (under twos free), £19.50 for adults, or £55 for a family ticket for two adults and two children.

The Fat Controller’s opening ceremony takes place at 9.45am on each of these days, with Thomas setting off every 20 minutes or so. Activities finish at 4pm.

Organisers recommended beginning your journey at Bury Bolton Street Station, but you can also buy tickets from Heywood, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall stations on the day.

Due to the limited amount of parking in Bury, it is also recommended that visitors travelling by car park in the large, free car park at Heywood Station .

Located less than a mile from Junction 19 of the M62, Heywood Station is easily accessible (via Railway Street) and can be reached by typing the postcode OL10 1LX into a sat nav.

As well as this weekend, May 4 to 6, there'll be another chance to see Thomas at the railway on August 3 and 4 and again on October 5 and 6.
