SHIMADA, Shizuoka -- A Thomas the Tank Engine steam locomotive decked out with a stocking cap on its chimney on Saturday started its special series of runs through Christmas in Shizuoka Prefecture.

The train is operated by Oigawa Railway Co. of Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture, which is known for its sightseeing trains towed by steam locomotives.

After its initial run from Saturday through Tuesday, there are two other periods during which people can ride this special Christmas train: from Friday to Dec. 14, and from Dec.18 to 25.

The train runs a 29.6-kilometer round trip between Shin-Kanaya Station and Ieyama Station.

As a measure against the novel coronavirus, the temperature of passengers is measured at stations.

A 28 year-old male company employee, who came from Nagoya with his three family members, said, "Our kids and I are so glad to see Thomas the Tank Engine."
