Thomas Partey’s new Arsenal squad number confirmed ahead of next season

Thomas Partey has selected a new Arsenal squad number ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The Ghanaian midfielder, who was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid last year, previously donned the number 18, with football.london understanding that he was keen to switch.

His favoured no. 5 shirt was previously claimed by Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos so he had to opt for a different selection.

However, it has now been confirmed that Partey will once again wear the no. 5 shirt, with the Gunners announcing his switch on Tuesday morning.

It appears that the number holds particular significance for the 28-year-old looking back at his career.

He was first given it during a solitary season with RCD Mallorca in 2013/14 before breaking into the Ghana squad and having it as his number ever since.

Partey also adopted the no. 5 shirt whilst with Atletico Madrid ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, holding onto it until his eventual departure last summer.

Upon confirmation of his new number, Partey said: “I like the No 5 because it's one of the most important numbers in the team and it is also a lucky number for me.

“It's the number I've worn for the past few years, so for me it's one of the best numbers."

The midfielder and of course his manager Mikel Arteta will certainly be hoping that his preferred number will bring more fortune next season.

After his arrival from Spain, Partey endured an inconsistent debut campaign at the Emirates Stadium.

Injuries took their toll and limited the Ghanaian to just 36 appearances in all competitions - just 26 of those being starts.
