Thomas Partey's expected Arsenal return date as Folarin Balogun transfer hint is spotted

Here's all the news from around the Emirates Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Player ratings vs Chelsea

Arsenal ended a miserable run of form in the Premier League to seal a much needed 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day.

First-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Granit Xhaka gave the Gunners some much needed breathing space, before Bukayo Saka got in on the act early in the second half.

There was to be no clean sheet for Bernd Leno as he was beaten by Tammy Abraham late on, but the German did manage to save a penalty from Jorginho to settle the nerves.

As expected, Lacazette and Saka scored high in the ratings, as did youngster Emile Smith Rowe who impressed on his first Premier League start of the season.

What is likely to happen in Arsenal's transfer window?

But how did the rest of the team fare?

Arteta transcript

The Gunners manager faced the media following the Chelsea game and the main talking point from his press conference was about the performance from his side.

"Well it's a really important win for us," Arteta told reporters. "Because as I mentioned before some of the performances have not been enough to win football matches and that's something obviously difficult to handle all the time.

"We needed the points, that's for sure, and today we've done it against one of the best teams in the league in a really convincing way. That shows you we're able to do it when we're at our best.

"Can we do it every three days? That's the question mark we need to respond in the next weeks or so, but today we needed that lift.

"The boys are delighted and of course for our fans because it's been some difficult weeks."

Partey and Gabriel updates

Arteta also delivered the latest on Thomas Partey and Gabriel Magalhaes ahead of Tuesday's game against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The latter missed the Chelsea game after coming into contact with someone has tested positive for Covid-19, while the Ghana international is still sidelined through injury.

While the Brazilian will miss the trip to the Amex Stadium, Partey is still a few days away from a return.

"We have to follow all the guidelines and protocols with COVID. The doctor is on top of that," Arteta said of Gabriel. "For how long still it's not 100 per cent convinced but he was in contact with someone who has tested positive, then he has to stay away for a few days.

[On Partey] "Not yet. He hasn't started to train with us yet so I think he's still a few more days away."

Balogun to Liverpool?

Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun is out of contract at the end of the season, and has recently been linked with a surprise move to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

In order for a move to Liverpool to materialise, Jurgen Klopp's side would have to agree on a fee with the Gunners next month or wait until June to sign him on a free.

With the transfer window opening very soon, the Gunners need to resolve Balogun's future or risk losing him for free at the end of the season.

But is there any truth to the rumours linking the teenager with a move to the reigning Premier League champions?

Well, some Liverpool fans think that could the case after reading into a social media exchange between Balogun and young midfielder Curtis Jones.

As spotted by @AnfieldWatch, Balogun and Jones swapped emojis after the Gunners forward commented on the latter's Instagram post. This prompted one Reds supporter to suggest that a deal is done.
