Thomas Partey names former Liverpool and Man City stars as his idols amid Arsenal transfer bid

The summer transfer window is now officially open for business, and Arsenal will be working tirelessly over the coming weeks to bolster their squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

After rounding off a below-par Premier League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Watford at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, the Gunners, who will lock horns with Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley, will be looking to add fresh faces to their squad ahead of, hopefully, mounting a top-four push next season.

Though the window is officially only two days old, Arsenal are being linked with a plethora of names, including Dayot Upamaceno of RB Leipzig, Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea winger Willian, Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho and Sporting Lisbon youngster Joelson Fernandes.

All of the names listed above would add a bouquet of quality to Mikel Arteta's squad, with each individual capable of delivering a whole host of different qualities.

Whilst the likes of Willian and Coutinho would present fresh options to Arteta in an attacking sense, the addition of Partey, who has been linked with a move to North London for several months, would add some much-needed steel to the Gunners' midfield, with the Ghanaian international capable of breaking up play and protecting the back-four.

In the past, the Premier League has seen many so-called tough-tacklers who are willing to take no prisoners, such as the likes of Roy Keane, Patrick Viera, Michael Essien, Yaya Toure and N'Golo Kante.

And Partey has now revealed that both Essien and Toure, as well as former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, are players he used to look up to for inspiration.

The Arsenal transfer target told Elmundo, via Prime News Ghana: "As a child, I watched many Premier matches. I saw a lot of Gerrard, then Yaya Touré or Essien.

"Any African footballer in my position wants to be like them."

The 25-year-old, who has been on Atletico's books since 2012, is still continuing to be regularly linked with a move to the Premier League, with the latest report claiming that Arsenal are ready to offer Atletico €25million as well as a player.
