Thomas Partey could be handed dream Arsenal shirt number if late transfer business comes off

Thomas Partey is on the verge of becoming Arsenal' s sixth signing of the summer.

After weeks of posturing, the Premier League giants have decided to meet the Atletico Madrid midfielder's release clause.

The north Londoners have agreed to pay the Spaniard's £45million for the 27-year-old, whose nine-year love affair with Los Rojiblancos is set to come to an end.

All that remains for Partey to seal his move to the Emirates - which he pushed through after enticing the Arsenal brass to meet his release clause - is for him to pass his medical and finalise personal terms.

Personal terms, however, are reported to have been provisionally agreed for a while.

With Partey's arrival at the Emirates seemingly imminent, attention has turned to what shirt number the Ghanaian will wear at the Emirates.

Partey currently occupies the No.5 shirt for club and country. And he could very well end up being given the same number at Arsenal.

That's because Arsenal's current No.5, Sokratis Papastathopoulos could be in line for a late exit.

Roma were reportedly eyeing up a late bid, although their move for Chris Smalling is now back on.

However, reports in France have linked Paris Saint-Germain with a loan swoop for the Greece international.

Should Sokratis end up leaving the Emirates, that would pave the way for Partey to wear the No.5 shirt.

He could, however, be handed the No.29 shirt - which is available following Matteo Guendouzi's loan move to Hertha Berlin.

The No.18, 26 and 27 shirts are also available for him to take should he opt for a different number.

Partey could make his Arsenal debut a week on Saturday when the Gunners travel to Manchester to take on Premier League title hopefuls Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
