Reg Cribb’s epic new play, Thomas Murray and the Upside Down River, is set against the backdrop of the drought-stricken Darling river. The Murray family have lived there for years, and it’s all Tom Murray has ever known. But when his childhood friends Lucy and Billy reappear, friendships are tested and secrets are unearthed. Tom must make the long journey downstream to reconcile for past wrongs and fight for his wife.
Fifteen years after Reg Cribb’s first play The Return was staged at Griffin, and a year after his 2003 play Last Cab to Darwin premiered as a feature film, his words are brought to life again on the Griffin stage.
Just as Last Cab to Darwin evoked the beauty of rural Australia, the new play looks at the emotional cost of climate change on the Australian landscape and those who are close to it.
