Thomas Meunier transfer: Manchester United 'set to beat' Arsenal to PSG star

Manchester United are closing on a deal for Thomas Meunier - pipping Arsenal to the Paris Saint-Germain fullback.

The Belgian international, 27, is set to leave the French champions this summer having grown frustrated with his role at the Parc des Princes.

After starring in his country's third place finish at last year's World Cup finals, Meunier played 90 minutes on just 18 occasions for PSG in 2018-19.

He also drew the ire of club officials after travelling to England to watch a United game last season and seeing his return to Paris delayed.

Now DH in Belgium declare that Meunier - who has made no secret in the past that he has been a United fan since his childhood - is set to make a switch to Old Trafford, with a deal potentially being completed in the next week.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing a summer overhaul and a new right-back is part of his agenda.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been the No.1 target, and United remain keen should he become available.

But with Crystal Palace determined to keep hold of the England Under-21 international, he seems set to stay at Selhurst Park, Solskjaer has also been looking elsewhere for a new first choice.

And Meunier, available for a fee in the region of £22million, fits the bill.

United are without Champions League football next season, after a dismal end to the season left them sixth in the Premier League.

But Meunier is keen on the move, having slipped down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel.

And PSG are willing sellers, as they look to balance the books.

A reunion with Unai Emery at Arsenal had been mooted, the Spaniard having worked with Meunier in the French capital.

But the Gunners have a limited budget this summer and are happy to stick with Ainsley Maitland-Niles until Hector Bellerin returns from injury next term.
