Thomas Meunier makes admission over why he did not sign for Everton

Thomas Meunier has spoken out over why a move to Everton did not materialise earlier this year.

The PSG right-back was in and out of the first team last season and speculation quickly mounted over his future.

Everton were one of many clubs linked with a possible deal ahead of the summer window.

And Meunier has admitted joining the Toffees would have been a "lot of fun".

But in an interview with newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, as cited by Sport Witness, the Belgian has opened up about transfer talks and the reason he did not join the Blues.

Meunier said: "There was interest and there have been conversations, but it never came to a point where I had to decide: Do I sign or not?

"Always one of the parties did not agree."

Asked if the situation was frustrating, Meunier explained: "No, because I have always made it clear that my ambition was to stay with PSG. I did not want to leave to leave.

"Because playing at PSG is special. You are part of a team that can win a European competition, that is not something many players can say.

“I could have signed with Everton – a good club. I would have played a lot, that’s for sure, and had a lot of fun too.

"But Everton doesn’t play in European competition."

Marco Silva did move to bolster his right-back options in the summer, with a loan deal sealed for France international Djibril Sidibe.

The Blues have the option to make that switch permanent at the end of the season.

And Sibide looks poised for a start against West Ham today in the absence of the suspended Seamus Coleman.
