Thomas Cook worker 'overwhelmed' as donations flood in for Merseyside staff to have 'one final farewell celebration'

A Thomas Cook worker was left "overwhelmed" after donations flooded in so that staff across Liverpool and Manchester could have a "final farewell celebration".

Regional Manager for the travel firm in the two cities Catherine Finlan said the money will be able to fund a party for workers which would have been held originally to honour their achievements.

The 40-year-old said the global travel group would usually have an awards ceremony every year to celebrate employees work.

She said branches in Liverpool won the coveted award of best regional team in the country at the event this year.

Since the collapse of Thomas Cook, Ms Finlan said the ceremony won't be going ahead this year, but she still wants to congratulate staff on their hard work.

She said the event would be for 190 members of staff affected in Liverpool and Manchester.

She said: "We're trying to get together one last time. Many of us have loved working here for many years.

"It would mean everything for them all to come together again to celebrate their achievements, it would mean the world."

Ms Finlan, who has worked for the company for 20 years, said Thomas Cook felt like a "family" and there were many strong friendships between staff.

She added: "I want something for them to look forward to. It's been a really challenging time so for them to meet with their friends and celebrate their achievements would mean everything."

The event was due to be held at Revolution de Cuba, she said, and the venue has been one of many companies to offer donations.

She said the kindness of other businesses has left her "overwhelmed".
