Thomas Cook warning after customers asked to pay nearly £1000 more for holiday

Thomas Cook customers are being warned not to pay twice for their holiday abroad.

This comes after tourists claimed they were imprisoned by hotel staff in Tunisia demanding a further 3000 Tunisian dinars per room.

One holidaymaker has since told the ECHO she was asked for €989 by a hotel in Spain, despite having already paid for her holiday.

The tourism giant announced early on Monday that it had ceased trading after failing to secure a last-ditch rescue deal, leaving an estimated 150,000 Britons abroad awaiting repatriation.

However, Martin Lewis is now warning that hotels could ask for more money from British tourists.

Martin founder of  MoneySavingExpert  said: "Those who’ve already paid for their hotels abroad as part of a Thomas Cook package shouldn’t pay again.

"Yet that won’t stop a few uncertain and scared hoteliers overseas wanting money directly from British travellers to be doubly sure.

"This could leave UK tourists in sticky situations. If so, the Civil Aviation Authority has a helpline which should sort it for you."

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the Government has asked it to launch a repatriation programme over the next two weeks, starting on Monday and running to Sunday, October 6.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said all customers currently abroad with Thomas Cook who are booked to return to the UK over the next two weeks will be brought home as close as possible to their booked return date.

Thomas Cook package holiday customers will also see the cost of their accommodation covered by the Government, through the Air Travel Trust Fund or ATOL scheme.

Customers currently overseas should not travel to the airport until their flight back to the UK has been confirmed on the dedicated website thomascook.caa.co.uk.

However, all bookings have been cancelled and, according to the CAA, Thomas Cook customers in the UK who have yet to travel should not go to the airport as all flights leaving the UK have been grounded.
