Thomas Cook 'monitoring' Egypt security situation as British Airways cancels flights

A tour operator says security concerns which led British Airways to cancel flights to Egypt do not currently affect its route from Newcastle to the Egyptian resort of Hurghada.

British Airways grounded flights from London to Cairo on Sunday and says it will not resume services between the UK and Egyptian capital for at least seven days.

British Airways said it took the decision as a "security precaution". The Foreign Office says terror attacks are 'highly likely' in Egypt, with planes flying in and out of the country a target.

Newcastle to Hurghada  flights on Monday, July 21 - the first of the school holiday season - are scheduled to go ahead, but Thomas Cook says it is keeping an eye on security updates from the Foreign Office.

A Thomas Cook spokesperson told ChronicleLive: "We always follow Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice. The additional security measures that they have put in place on flights from Egypt to the UK do not impact our flights from Hurghada and Marsa Alam, which continue to operate as normal. The safety of our customers and crew is always our first priority and we continue to monitor the situation."
