Thomas Cook collapse: What to do if you are due to go on holiday

Thomas Cook has gone into liquidation leaving scores of customers holiday plans scuppered.

It is estimated that over one million holidaymakers have seen their flights cancelled after the tour operator collapsed on Monday.

From September 23, all holidays and flights booked with Thomas Cook have been cancelled and customers are advised not to go to the airport.

What will happen if I was due to go on holiday with Thomas Cook?

The Civil Aviation Authority has said that if your flight is ATOL protected by Thomas Cook, you should make a claim for a refund via the ATOL scheme.

The CAA say more information about refund arrangements will be published by September 30.

If your Thomas Cook flights are not ATOL protected, you may be able to claim from your travel insurer, your credit card issuer or bank.

If you booked an ATOL-protected holiday with Thomas Cook but your flights are with an airline unrelated to the Thomas Cook Group, your flights may still be available, but your accommodation and transfers may not be.

What if I've booked Thomas Cook flights or holidays through another travel company or travel agent?

If you booked a flight or holiday with another travel company or travel agent you should contact them directly about your arrangements.

When will I get a refund?

ATOL protected passengers with future bookings are entitled to a full refund for their cancelled holiday.

The CAA say they will be launching a service to manage all refunds on Monday, September 30.

This refund service will seek to process all refunds within two months of receipt of a fully completed claims form.

Passengers are advised not to submit anything to the CAA before the 30th Septmeber, as the organisation's current priority is to return more than 150,000 passengers back to the UK.

How do I know if I am ATOL protected?

If your flight or holiday is ATOL protected, you should have received an ATOL Certificate as soon as you made any payment towards the booking, either by e-mail or by post.

ATOL protection only applies to hotels when booked as part of an air inclusive package holiday.

Consequently, if you bought a hotel only, this will not be ATOL protected.

You should contact your card issuer, bank, or travel insurer for advice on whether you can claim a refund.

Some non-flight packages or hotel bookings may be protected by trade organisations such as ABTA.

For all information on the situation, customers are advised to visit the dedicated website set up by the CAA - thomascook.caa.co.uk.
