Thomas Christiansen flop explains difference behind Leeds United promotion hopes under Marcelo Bielsa

Former Leeds United defender Vurnon Anita has opened up about his decision to join the club from Newcastle United.

The Dutch midfielder secured promotion with the Magpies in 2017, winning the Championship title.

However, Anita was told he wouldn't feature in the Premier League and the versatile Dutchman was expected to return to his native country.

However, instead, a surprise move to Yorkshire beckoned, with Anita penning on the dotted line for Leeds under the regime of Thomas Christiansen.

It was a disappointing season on the pitch for Leeds and Anita, though, as the club slumped to a 14th place finish under Paul Heckingbottom, who had replaced Christiansen before the season was out.

Bielsa arrived at Elland Road and Anita was deemed surplus to requirements and, as a result, Anita spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Willem II before leaving the club permanently in the summer.

Anita recalls the decision to move to Leeds and believes a lack of stability, which the club now boasts, was detrimental to their hopes of promotion.

He told Dutch outlet Voetballzone: “They (Leeds) really wanted me and I thought: why not?

"I had played against Leeds before and it was always a good club, a difficult opponent. I thought it would be a good step to obtain a promotion with Leeds.

"Of course, I hoped that I would play a lot and become champion, that was the goal. Now there is more stability in the team and the club. When I came, there were just new owners and trainers."
