Thomas Barr appeal to replace Alessandro Sibilio is 400m hurdles final unsuccessful

Thomas Barr will not replace Alessandro Sibilio in the 400m hurdles final in Tokyo.

Barr ran a season's best time of 48.26 seconds but finished fourth in his semi-final after clipping hurdle seven, which caused him to miss out on a fastest loser's spot.

However the Waterford man could yet find himself in the final after Team Ireland lodged an appeal over 'hooking' by the Italian Sibilio, an act that involves dragging the trail leg around the hurdle - and a height lower than the barrier.

And the result broke on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking after his semi-final, Barr said: “For it to fall apart like that in a split second is frustrating but that’s the game I’m in, the hurdles, and I was one of the unlucky ones.

"It’s such a shame because that’s the second fastest time I’ve ever run and it’d probably have been 47-something. It was frustrating. It’s going to be a tough one to follow.

"I came in here as a contender, I’ve been a contender all year and I couldn’t do it on a day where I felt really good.”
