Thistles Centre earmarked for "futureproofing" effort to help post-Covid recovery

A London-based architecture firm has been given the task of “future-proofing” Stirling’s Thistles Centre as it emerges from the pandemic.

POD Architects have been appointed by asset management group Scoop - who run the centre on behalf of its owners - and have been given the task of getting the centre back on its feet after losing stores such as Burton and the Debenhams outlet.

The fresh plan comes as non-essential retail prepares to re-open its doors in Scotland on April 26, with hopes for a bounce-back year in 2021.

It will include an effort to “creatively realise the reconfiguration of vacant spaces”, as well as responding to the changing dynamics being faced by shopping centres up and down the country.

Mark Hewett, director at Scoop, said: “The high street is expected to take on a very different form post-Covid and we now have an exciting opportunity to shape the future of the Thistles.

“Future-proofing is vital to ensure primary shopping centres remain relevant and a place where people want to be – they will be about far more than just shopping. We are looking forward to evolving the Thistles Shopping Centre to ensure it remains the beating heart of the city.

“The Thistles Shopping Centre is an important asset for Stirling, and is set to provide benefits for the city and the surrounding community for generations to come.”

Paul Shedden, founder of POD Architects, added: “Over the years the requirements for retail, and shopping centres in particular, have changed as more and more people seek superior shopping experiences to draw them out of their homes.

“We aim to produce creative and exciting destinations which draw people in. We look forward to embarking on this exciting journey with Scoop.”

Scoop were appointed as the centre’s asset managers by AXA Investment Managers, who bought the site from Aberdeen Standard in a deal completed in December.

Following the announcement, Mr Hewett confirmed that finding a future for the former Debenhams space would be their “first objective” in efforts to revitalise the centre’s fortunes.

The Thistles provides more than 500,000 sq ft of retail space over a single level with a total of 90 units including anchors such as M&S, Primark, Boots, Next, Superdrug, River Island and JD Sports.

Along with stabilising the use of the Debenhams unit, Scoop’s other initiatives are believed to include delivering key lettings, the relocation/upsizing of existing retailers and the introduction of increased catering options.
