This year's Nikon Small World Microscopy competition winners are named. Can you guess what these super close-ups are?

"It's a small world after all..."

The winners of the 2022 Nikon Small World Photo Microscopy Competition have been revealed, chosen from thousands of entries from all around the world.

This competition shows off the best of the best of microscopic images, which often take hours to capture and even longer to curate.

The images themselves are beautifully detailed and reveal a new perspective of everyday things around us, things some of us may never see in real life, or even things inside our own bodies, but can you tell what they are?

Take our quiz and see how many you get right.

The 2022 Nikon Small World Photo Microscopy Competition was judged by:

  • Cell biologist and National Academy of Sciences member Dr Clare Waterman
  • The Washington Post photo editor Annaliese Nurnberg
  • The New York Times senior video journalist Dr Nikolay Nikolov
  • Associate Professor and Head of the Federal University of Minas Gerais' Center for Gastrointestinal Biology Dr Gustavo Menezes.
