'This will hurt for a while' Jamie Shackleton among Leeds United stars to open up on Derby defeat

Leeds United players past and present have sent out their heartfelt message today, following the aftermath of yesterday’s devastating play-off defeat to Derby County .

Goals from Jack Marriott, Mason Mount and Harry Wilson saw the Rams turn the tie on its head, eventually running out 4-3 winners on aggregate.

That result has left the city of Leeds United mourning for the season that ‘could have been’ after the Whites fell short of promotion once again.

After last night’s heartbreak, the posts have been pouring in from fans, but also current players and some blasts from the past.

Of the current crop, Jamie Shackleton, Tyler Roberts, Jack Clarke, Mateusz Klich and loanee Izzy Brown have all sent out messages via their social media channels.

The whole of Elland Road were praying the script was written for Brown to grab the leveller, who has only managed 11 minutes of football for the club prior to last night's match. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, as he blazed a late free-kick over the bar.

Of the former players, Lucas Radebe and Olivier Dacourt were all emotional with their message on Twitter, whilst Ian Harte, Michael Bridges and Brian Deane tried to stay more reflective, although their disappointment was clear.

Rio Ferdinand, however, leapt to praise his former England teammate Frank Lampard, ahead of his former club…

No doubt this will be just the tip of the iceberg, as players compose themselves following this major disappointment over the coming days.
