Nothing kills an appetite faster than catching the host flossing with her fingernail. A South Carolina woman is going viral after filming a restaurant employee casually picking food out of her teeth mid-shift with a text overlay stating, “This is why I HATE eating out.”
However, it gets even spicier since the internet isn’t exactly siding with her. Some commenters rushed to defend the hostess, arguing that she wasn’t handling food and that everyone has human moments. Others pointed out that if you think this is gross, you clearly haven’t seen what goes down behind the kitchen doors. What started as a callout quickly turned into a debate about restaurant etiquette, double standards, and just how far is too far when it comes to calling out bad behavior on camera.
Order Up?
Sneek’s (@sneek._.kiki) clip might have just been six seconds long, but it was more than enough to start an entire drama about server life and dining etiquette. Now at over 500,000 views, the comments keep ramping up, and the sides just keep getting more divided. The clip has no audio from Sneek, but her caption simply states, “I swear every time I go out I see some nasty [expletive].”
In the video, the hostess walks right in front of the camera, heading towards the screen where employees input their orders. All the while, she nonchalantly has almost her entire hand in her mouth, picking between her teeth. She looks unconcerned that this might not be the setting where one does this. After all, what are bathrooms for? As unconcerned as she is, the comments pile up to defend her honor.
One viewer demands, “YALL BETTER NOT DISRESPECT HER.” While another states, “She’s not cooking your food.” One even says, “Y’all better leave my queen alone, she never did nothing wrong.”
On the other hand, there are a few that don’t see the “nasty” part, but do agree that it should not have happened. One says, “As a waitress, I can say she has nothing to do with food, cooking or handing it, so it’s not that deep BUTTT she still shouldn’t be doing that in front of customers.”
Another shares, “If shes the hostess im just gonna pretend i didnt see it. i worked in food for years and theres been much worse happening in BOH [behind-the-scenes].”
Why are Waiters Always Defended?
Just eight months ago, a seemingly innocent post went up in the subreddit r/NoStupidQuestions. The question was: Why do people defend waiters more than any other profession? If one looked at the subreddit r/TalesFromYourServer–that has over 600,000 community members– they’d find countless viral posts where servers vent and complain about customers, with the majority of the commenters agreeing with their frustration.
Of course, a lot of the discourse focuses on tipping culture. A highly tumultuous topic, especially in the United States, servers are always viewed differently than other professions. The only other similarly regarded ones might be those who work in retail. It goes without saying that what binds these professions to their infamy is the nature of the job that involves dealing with customers all day long.
The Mary Sue has covered a myriad of server stories, with many of them being horror tales from behind the bar. From a server taking revenge on a vaping teen who left no tip, to another server having to ask for a tip after serving a table of 16 with a $300 bill. It’s clear that the job is stressful and taxing, which is why the commenters under Sneek’s clip come to the hostess’s defense.
