A Bigger Splash (15)
(Luca Guadagnino, 2015, Ita/Fra) Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts. 124 mins
An unstable foursome assemble at a Mediterranean villa for a strained, sexually charged holiday. It’s the type of film where something might happen but we’re perfectly happy if nothing does, if only because the characters and location are so captivating. Fiennes steals the show as a party animal; Swinton is his opposite: an imperious, practically mute rock star. There’s history between them; possibly less of a future.
Deadpool (15)
(Tim Miller, 2016, US/Can) Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano. 108 mins
In the crowded comic-book movie marketplace, this superhero entry finds a niche somewhere between Kick-Ass and Iron Man, thanks to Reynolds’s wise-cracking motormouth and a general self-aware irreverence.
Zoolander No 2 (12A)
(Ben Stiller, 2016, US) Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson. 102 mins
Stiller’s heroically vacant model returns with a celebrity entourage (Kristen Wiig, Penélope Cruz, Benedict Cumberbatch). The result could be this season’s must-see transcendently silly action comedy.
The Survivalist (18)
(Stephen Fingleton, 2015, UK) Martin McCann, Mia Goth. 101 mins
Trust, food, disinfectant and other basic commodities are in short supply in this tense post-apocalyptic woodland scenario, marvellously sustained by solid acting and economical storytelling.
Pride And Prejudice And Zombies (15)
(Burr Steers, 2016, US) Lily James, Sam Riley. 108 mins
Self-explanatory female-empowerment mash-up, though the marriage of Austen-esque courtship and 19th-century horror action is not always a happy one.
Concussion (12A)
(Peter Landesman, 2015, UK/Aus/US) Will Smith, Gugu Mbatha-Raw. 123 mins
Smith plays a noble, real-life Nigerian doctor who exposed a brain condition killing American footballers, which made him some powerful enemies.
The Green Inferno (18)
(Eli Roth, 2013, Chil/US) Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy. 98 mins
Shock, gore and satirical spear-chucking, as American do-gooders find themselves on the menu of the Amazon tribe they’re trying to save.
I’ll See You In My Dreams (12A)
(Brett Haley, 2015, US) Blythe Danner, Martin Starr, Sam Elliott. 94 mins
A widow reconnects with her singing and her inner hotness in a likable romance.
Noble (15)
(Stephen Bradley, 2014, UK/Vie) Deirdre O’Kane, Sarah Greene. 99 mins
Stirring biopic of an Irish woman who overcame her troubled past.
Jem And The Holograms (PG)
(Jon M Chu, 2015, US) Aubrey Peebles, Juliette Lewis. 118 mins
Pitch Perfect-styled chronicle of a teen’s pop-stardom, incorporating her late father’s hologram-projecting robot.
Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip (U)
(Walt Becker, 2015, US) Jason Lee,92 mins
More juvenile rodent frolics.
Oddball And The Penguins (U)
(Stuart McDonald, 2015, Aus) Shane Jacobsen, Sarah Snook. 96 mins
Aussie family feelgood film about a dog who saved a penguin sanctuary.
