This week’s new films

The Lobster
Don’t fancy mine much… The Lobster

The Lobster (15)
(Yorgos Lanthimos, 2015, Ire/UK/Ger/Fra/Neth) Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman. 118 mins

Another sealed-off microcosm of madness from the Dogtooth director, seen through with the same controlled, deadpan conviction. This time it’s a country retreat where singles must find a mate or be turned into animals, hence Farrell’s wildly unpredictable efforts to avoid what you might call the shellfish gene.

Crimson Peak (15)
(Guillermo del Toro, 2015, US) Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston. 119 mins

Del Toro furnishes his haunted house with gothic gloom, creepy family members and dark secrets.

Suffragette (12A)
(Sarah Gavron, 2015, UK) Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff. 106 mins

Feminist history done justice with a well-researched and stirring drama.

Pan (PG)
(Joe Wright, 2015, US/UK/Aus) Hugh Jackman, Levi Miller, Rooney Mara. 111 mins

Lavish visuals are squandered on this baffling, fatally un-magical revisionist fairy tale.

The Program (15)
(Stephen Frears, 2015, UK/Fra) Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, Jesse Plemons. 103 mins

The story of Lance Armstrong’s championship-standard cheating and its eventual exposure is a tale worth retelling, and Foster does a fine impersonation.

Hotel Transylvania 2 (U)
(Genndy Tartakovsky, 2015, US) Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez. 89 mins

Detailed, somewhat predictable animated sequel expanding on the woes of vampire parenthood.

Howl (18)
(Paul Hyett, 2015, UK) Ed Speelers, Holly Weston, Elliot Cowan. 89 mins

Commuters have a beastly train journey home in an effects-happy creature horror.

Censored Voices (NC)
(Mor Loushy, 2015, Isr/Ger) 87 mins

The reflections of Israeli soldiers on the 1967 six-day war add up to a human picture of Middle Eastern history that sheds light on the current situation.

The Diabolical (15)
(Alistair Legrand, 2015, US) Ali Larter, Arjun Gupta, Patrick Fischler. 83 mins

Larter’s single mum is subjected to the usual smörgåsbord of supernatural scares.

SuperBob (15)
(Jon Drever, 2014, UK) Brett Goldstein, Catherine Tate, Natalia Tena. 80 mins

Affectionate low-budget comedy detailing the trials of a British superhero who’s a bit lonely and awkward.

I Believe In Miracles (12A)
(Jonny Owen, 2015, UK) 104 mins

The legend of Brian Clough’s managerialism gets a straightforward documentary going-over.

North V South (18)
(Steven Nesbit, 2015, UK) Steven Berkoff, Freema Agyeman. 96 mins

National divisions lead to a gangster shoot-em-up that turns out to be a Romeo And Juliet retelling.

Rough Cut (15)
(Owen Carey Jones, 2015, UK/Fra) Stanley J Browne, Angelique Joan, Matt Gras. 109 mins

Riviera-set Brit thriller that feels more like an amateur vanity project.
