The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (12A)
(Francis Lawrence, 2015, US) Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth. 137 mins
The queen of future-imperfect youth sagas comes to a spectacular conclusion (finally), regaining at least some of the steam it lost in Part 1 as Lawrence’s reluctant Joan of Arc figure leads the rebellion to the Capitol. As ever, she’s magnificent but, also as ever, it’s a battle muddied by doubt, mistrust and media manipulation.
Güeros (15)
(Alonso Ruiz Palacios, 2014, Mex) Tenoch Huerta, Sebastián Aguirre, Ilse Salas. 108 mins
An impressive, very likable New Wave-ish youth movie as playful-yet-cool as its subjects: apathetic students in strike-crippled 1990s Mexico City, whose aimless misadventures become a quest for a mythical singer.
Love (18)
(Gaspar Noé, 2015, Fra/Bel) Karl Glusman, Aomi Muyock, Klara Kristin. 135 mins
He’s naughty, that Gaspar Noé. But his full-on sex odyssey is less shocking than previous provocations (Enter The Void, Irreversible). Erotically uninhibited but somehow sentimental.
The Dressmaker (12A)
(Jocelyn Moorhouse, 2015, Aus) Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth, Judy Davis. 118 mins
Winslet’s classy couturier returns to her stereotypical outback town to set the record straight and raise the sartorial tone, though this romcom’s distinctive fabric is cut to a familiar pattern.
My Nazi Legacy (PG)
(David Evans, 2015, UK) 94 mins
A personal journey through history, as a Jewish lawyer confronts two very different sons of high-ranking Nazis.
The Russian Woodpecker (NC)
(Chad Gracia, 2015, Ukr/US/UK) 80 mins
Fascinating conspiracy doc following a Ukrainian artist out to prove the Chernobyl disaster was an inside job.
Star Men (PG)
(Alison E Rose, 2015, Can/US/UK) 88 mins
Four British astronomers reunite for a hike filled with reminiscences and cosmological musings.
Momentum (15)
(Stephen S Campanelli, 2015, SA/US) Olga Kurylenko, James Purefoy. 94 mins
Kurylenko leads a silly story involving high-tech heists and old-school explosions.
The Perfect Guy (15)
(David M Rosenthal, 2015, US) Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut. 100 mins
Rebounding Lathan picks Mr Wrong in this obvious thriller, which comes on like a reverse-Fatal Attraction.
Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans (15)
(Gabriel Clarke, John McKenna, 2015, US/UK) 102 mins
Doc on the star and his hubristic racing movie.
Revenge Of The Mekons (15)
(Joe Angio, 2013, UK) 95 mins
Superior doc on the enduring punk/post-punk/alt-country outfit and their place in music history.
Hand Gestures (U)
(Francesco Clerici, 2015, Ita) 77 mins
Niche doc on the process of bronze casting, which has barely changed in millennia.
True Romance (18)
(Tony Scott, 1993, US/Fra) Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper. 114 mins
Tarantino-scripted thrill ride in the mould of Bonnie & Clyde, with an impressive array of names.
