Vintage By The Sea, Morecambe
Having once hosted the likes of Noël Coward and Coco Chanel, Morecambe's Midland Hotel celebrates turning 80 by entertaining the latest vintage festival-cum-nomadic gala curated by Wayne Hemingway. As ever, it's a case of mix and match eras, with tea dances, rock'n'roll, crafting workshops and retro food among the daytime diversions. The evening offers both Brylcreem and talcum powder, with the Palm Court Dance Orchestra at The Torch Club, while The Soul Casino at the nearby Winter Gardens cues up northern soul.

Saltaire Festival
Set amid the architectural delights of Victorian tycoon Sir Titus Salt's model village, Saltaire festival brings equally diverse entertainments to its World Heritage site-listed streets. Salt's Italianate United Reformed Church welcomes the shawms and sackbuts of The York Waits, performing music from Richard III's reign (Sat), and the arts and crafts Makers' Fair takes place amid the corniced grandeur of Victoria Hall (Sat and Sun), which also hosts poet John Hegley (Fri). The Caroline Social Club has slide guitar maestro Kelly Joe Phelps (Mon) and Edinburgh-honed comics Romesh Ranganathan and Benny Boot (Wed), while kids can board the Shipley Glen Tramway for a cable-drawn treasure hunt.

London Design Festival
It's amazing how this celebration of British and international design manages to cram so much in. The 100% Design event at Earls Court (Wed to 21 Sep) draws the mass-market crowds, whereas Designersblock on the South Bank focuses on exciting designers. The festival's Design Is Everywhere theme is certainly in effect with events in Hoxton and Shoreditch out east, and Sou Fujimoto's Serpentine Pavilion in the west.
