A Streetcar Named Desire, London
This 2012 production of the Tennessee Williams play has been one of Scottish Ballet’s great successes in recent years. Choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, in collaboration with director Nancy Meckler, it translates the hot, humid poetry of Williams’s text into dance of vivid physicality. Especially powerful is the portrayal of Blanche DuBois, the fading southern belle who clings tremulously to her illusions of family grandeur. Even if the narrative aims for too faithful a representation of the play, the action is inventively staged, and the mix of fractured jazz and sound effects in Peter Salem’s score builds the production to a pitch of dramatic intensity.

Experiential is a mixed-media company whose saturated fusion of dance, design, film and music aims to draw the audience deep into the performers’ world. This collaborative work by artistic director Rachel Johnson is designed to evoke the changes of light and atmosphere that accompany the transition from night to dawn, with the audience free to move around the performance space, creating their own story around the richly shifting imagery. As with all immersive theatre, the ambition is to encourage viewers to bring personal experience to the work: their own night terrors and sunrise memories.
