Ultima Vez, On tour
With 1987’s What The Body Does Not Remember, the Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus and the dancers of his company Ultima Vez initiated something of a revolution. Choreography of this adrenaline-fuelled force and recklessness had rarely been seen on the dance stage, as the dancers – a tribe of urban warriors – ducked and dived, jumped and crash-landed in combat rolls. Now, 28 years later, the production returns to Britain for a UK-wide tour.
Ballet Black, London
Ballet Black continues to be a shining example of bold, clever commissioning, catching interesting new choreographers on the rise or bringing out new ideas from established dance-makers. Their 2015 programme features The Second Coming, a new work from Mark Bruce that draws on the poetic world of Yeats and the collective mythic imagination. A second work from dancer and emerging choreographer Kit Holder, …To Fetch A Pail Of Water?, sees a fusion of electronic music and swing jazz drive a contemporary retelling of Jack And Jill. Completing the programme is a revival of Will Tuckett’s Depouillement.
