Royal New Zealand Ballet, On tour

Over the course of its 62-year history, this company has developed a history of smart and unusual programming, and for this UK tour it is demonstrating its eclectic repertory in two contrasting bills. The first is an elegantly stylish version of Giselle, by former artistic director Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg. The second is a mixed programme of four short ballets, all connected to New Zealand and headed up by the European premiere of The Anatomy of A Passing Cloud, by maverick choreographer Javier de Frutos.

Rambert, London

Rambert’s artistic director Mark Baldwin has made a policy of commissioning works from choreographers who are either British or have close links with the UK. Rambert’s latest triple bill features Didy Veldman’s The 3 Dancers, a new piece inspired by Pablo Picasso’s painting of the same name, which gives choreographic form to the artwork’s imagery of death and desire. From Kim Brandstrup comes Transfigured Night, responding to the dark secrets in Schoenberg’s score with two lovers who meet at midnight. Completing the evening is a revival of Rooster, Christopher Bruce’s swaggering homage to the music of the Rolling Stones.
