Bolshoi Ballet: The Taming Of The Shrew, Nationwide
Jean-Christophe Maillot’s production of the Shakespeare comedy – being broadcast from Russia to cinemas across the UK – is his first work for the Bolshoi, and shows the company in a very different light from its mainstream repertory. This work focuses on the maverick energy of its main characters, the wilfully unconventional Katharina and her ambitious suitor Petruchio. Presented within a minimalist set, animated by Dominique Drillot’s inventive lighting design, Maillot’s sharp contemporary choreography plays to the expressive skills of its dancers.

This two-day taster-festival has become a regular fixture, promising a bargain ticket to the Wells’s wide-ranging dance output. With prices ranging from £8 to £15, audiences get to see Outlier, Wayne McGregor’s superbly concentrated setting of Thomas Adès’s violin concerto Concentric Paths; plus B-boy crew The Ruggeds in their fiercely physical work Adrenaline. There are also extracts from Northern Ballet’s 1984 and The 7 Fingers’ latest production Triptyque. Two artists from the BBC’s Young Dancer competition will also perform: the winner Connor Scott in his contemporary solo Get Up, and finalist Vidya Patel in the Indian dance-inflected duet, Khoj – The Search.
