Russell Maliphant Company: Conceal/Reveal, Salford
Choreographer Russell Maliphant and lighting designer Michael Hulls have been working together for the last 20 years, carving out a unique language of dance and light between them. Marking this anniversary, Maliphant’s company revives milestone works from the duo’s creative past, including Broken Fall, originally performed by Sylvie Guillem and BalletBoyz. It also premieres new productions including a quintet and a solo for Maliphant’s partner Dana Fouras, set to a commissioned score by Mukul and with costumes by Stevie Stewart.

Out Of India: Modern Moves, London
India has long been home to a rich classical dance culture but its contemporary scene is expanding rapidly, and three of its most interesting dance makers form a highlight of this year’s Dance Umbrella. Bangalore-born Deepak Kurki Shivaswamy explores India’s urbanisation in his duet NH7; in Trikonanga Hemabharathy Palani deconstructs the Bharatanatyam language into geometric forms; and in Nerves, Surjit Nongmeikapam fuses Indian folk dance, martial arts and more in a look at the social issues in his home state, Manipur.
