This week's family streaming picks

In the lazy days of August, what to stream for kids and families? Especially with the abundance of streaming services, it can be hard to navigate anything new and noteworthy, so here's a glimpse at the newest family-friendly fare at the end of July and August.

Good news: "Mulan" will be coming to Disney+ Sept. 4, with a hefty $30 rental price. But when you add up the cost of movie theater tickets, transportation and snacks for a family, the rental is a steal. So mark your calendars and make a night of it. Until then on Disney+, enjoy the new series "Muppets Now," the first episode of which dropped July 31, with the second ep arriving Friday. The reboot of the beloved Jim Henson's "The Muppet Show" features celeb guests and sketch comedy in short blocks, so it's great for parents who loved the original, and their kids, used to short-form content. For older kids and parents, try out the docuseries "Rogue Trip," which launched July 24 and stars former ABC war correspondent Bob Woodruff and his son Mack traveling the world to discover the beauty and magic in some of the world's troubled regions.

On Netflix, that '80s childhood classic "The NeverEnding Story" dropped Aug. 1, along with the 1990 sequel "The NeverEnding Story 2: The Next Chapter." Climb aboard Falkor and ride away into this nostalgic fantasy film. A few more series come to Netflix Family this month like "Operation Ouch: Season 1," a science and biology show for kids hosted by British doctor twins; "Super Monsters: The New Class," a colorful animated series for preschoolers; and "A Go! Go! Cory Carson Summer Camp," a 20-minute animated special.

On Friday, Netflix Family brings back the iconic Miss Frizzle with the animated movie "The Magic School Bus Rides Again Kids In Space." Also launching Friday is the DreamWorks fantasy animated series "Wizards: Tales of Arcadia." Another preschooler-aged series arriving Friday is "Jim Henson's Word Party Songs," a musical series for kids.

NBC's new streaming series Peacock also has a deep library to plumb for nostalgic childhood favorite movies (the advantage: You can sign up for free and watch most of their content with ads rather than pony up the subscription fee first). This month they've added Steven Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," so now is the perfect time to share the film with your kids if they've never seen it (or just revisit it).
