Seven, Edinburgh
Under the direction of Martin Schläpfer, German company Ballett Am Rhein has been galvanised to a new level of creativity in both its repertory and performances. In this new ballet, Schläpfer has taken on the epic challenge of Mahler’s Seventh Symphony, creating a work that shows off the dancers’ virtuosity while choreographing a state of very modern ambivalence and uncertainty. Ranging from a limpid classicism to darkly expressionist movement, the ballet runs the gamut of emotions in Mahler’s score, played by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Lo Real/Le Réel/The Real, Edinburgh
Like many of flamenco’s greatest performers, Israel Galván was born to dancing parents. But while he was trained in the classical traditions of flamenco, his own choreography has expanded into increasingly experimental terrain. Lo Real is one of his most challenging works to date, a dark, poignant evocation that focuses on the persecution of the Roma people during the Holocaust. Using music that ranges from traditional forms to the Antony And The Johnsons’ song Hitler In My Heart, Galván takes his choreography to anguished extremes as he attempts to show the suffering of those who were tortured and killed during that period – but also to celebrate those who survived.
