This wee Edinburgh cafe has launched a new Irn-Bru pie, and you have to see it to believe it

A chicken and haggis pie cooked in an Irn Bru sauce might sound off-putting, and maybe it is, but it's certainly catching people's imagination today, reports the Daily Record.

The unusual concoction is the brainchild of Newhaven cafe Nettie's, a gourmet pie shop with the logo: "Say aye tae the pie."

Lynette Shields, who opened the Newhaven Road eatery in December last year, credits husband Thomas for the idea for the uniquely Scottish recipe, jokingly adding: "Aye, not bad for an electrician."

She says her secret recipe was just a bit of fun: "With the lockdown, we were put on hold so we were looking for something to grab people's attention."

The delicious recipe is already a big hit with Nettie's kids and some customers also came in for a special taster.

She added: "It's going really well so far, we are already experimenting with other recipes including the Stornoway Stoater, which consists of Stornoway black pudding, a poached egg and hollandaise sauce."

Nettie said the special pie will cost £2.40 when it goes on sale on Monday, June 22.

Edinburgh Live spoke to Nettie, who said that the pie has gone down a treat so far, and she'll be putting aside a pie for us tomorrow so we can do a sneak-peek taste test of the unusual snack.

The takeaway, which only reopened this week after being closed during lockdown, specialises in pies but also sells a range of rolls, wraps, paninis, and lunch specials.

"We are also planning a Festival range which over the next few weeks too with a pork and prosecco, steak and red wine, and even a surprise Jagermeister pie," she said.

Customer Nikki Forrest from Bonnyrigg, who tried the incredible looking pie said: "It was phenomenal, will definitely be back for more."

While local resident Kenny Smith added: "Didn't know what to expect but it was amazing, can't wait to see what they come up with next."
