'This was to say' - Micah Richards makes Andy Robertson point after Liverpool return

Micah Richards believes Andy Robertson showed why he’s Liverpool’s first choice left-back during their 4-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.

Kostas Tsimikas started the Reds’ games against Porto and Arsenal, leaving fans and pundits wondering if the Greece international had moved ahead of Robertson in Jurgen Klopp's pecking order.

But the Scotland international was back against the Saints and produced a vintage performance, setting up the first of Diogo Jota’s two goals.

Thiago added a third before half-time to put Liverpool in complete control and Virgil van Dijk sealed an emphatic victory with a fine volley from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner shortly after the break.

Former Manchester City defender Richards was full of praise for Robertson's display, and claims he put to bed any doubts as to was Klopp’s first choice at left-back.

“Tsimikas has played outstandingly well but Robertson showed today why he’s number one," Richards said whilst discussing the Reds’ performance on the BBC’s Match of the Day.

“Everything in his game was just brilliant, from start to finish he gives so much energy.

“The variance he’s got to his game, he doesn’t just play the simple pass. They couldn’t deal with him.

“This was a performance to say I’m still one of the best defenders in the league. Top performance, from a top player.”

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City for £10million in the summer of 2017, and since arriving at Anfield the 27-year-old has clocked up 191 appearances, scoring five goals and notching 40 assists.
