This video shows a policeman threatening to fire a taser in a shopping centre - now the incident is under investigation

A police officer has been placed on restricted duties after a video involving the user of a Taser in Oldham emerged.

Video of the incident, said to have happened in Oldham town centre on Friday afternoon, began circulating online this weekend.

In it a man wearing a police jacket, now confirmed to be an on-duty officer "responding to an incident", can be seen speaking to a man.

At the start of the video the man is heard saying to the officer "chill the f*** out innit, don't get cocky bro, relax man."

At that stage the officer runs towards the man and tries to grab hold of his arms.

As the man breaks free the officer appears to then pull out his Taser and shout 'Taser' and chases the man into a shopping centre past bewildered shoppers.

What happens afterwards cannot be seen.

Greater Manchester Police have today confirmed they are aware of the footage and that they will asking for the matter to be reviewed the matter to the police watchdog.

In a statement the force said: "GMP are aware of a video circulating online purporting to show an on-duty officer deploying his Taser while responding to an incident in Oldham town centre.

"The Professional Standards Branch has been made aware of the incident and has asked for the matter to be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

"The officer has been placed on restricted duties while the referral is being reviewed."

No further details about the incident have been disclosed.

An IOPC spokeswoman said: “When we receive a referral it will be assessed to determine if an investigation is required.”
