This town in Salford has been named one of the cleanest in the UK

A Greater Manchester town has been named one of the cleanest in the whole of the Britain.

Eccles in Salford has ranked in the top ten in a list which ranks the cleanliness of the UK's cities and towns.

The 2019 Clean Britain Report is based on a number of factors to determine the best and worst-performing areas.

The study compares the quality of recycling, air quality, water quality and frequency of social media updates relating to sustainability.

Of the 63 towns and cities listed, Eccles , which is governed by Salford City Council MBC ranked eighth, making it the only town in Greater Manchester to make the cut.

The town scored 45.74% for the amount of household waste recycled and 87.77% for water quality.

It was also given an 10 for air quality - well above the average score of 8.

Nearby areas of Wigan and Manchester narrowly missed the top ten list, ranking 12 and 13 respectively.

In terms of the dirtiest towns across Britain, not a single Greater Manchester town was listed.

However the area of Salford itself was revealed as the worst town in the UK for air quality, at a whopping 15 ug/m3 .

While the town has a high percentage of waste sent for recycling (45.74%), its overall cleanliness score was brought down based on the extremely poor air quality.

Jo Price, PR manager at  holidaycottages.co.uk  who conducted the report said: “We have a long way to go to improve the UK’s environment, but it would appear the wheels are finally turning in the right direction all across the country.

"Whilst waiting for your local councils to make their moves apparent, there are many ways you can help make the planet cleaner on a personal level, such joining a community group, taking part in a beach clean or taking an active interest in what your borough council do to combat litter”
