A brace had been mooted for the South Bank. Building Design reports:
In the second week of a joint public inquiry into the schemes, it emerged that Johnson's deputy mayor Ian Clement had written to inspector John Gray claiming the Blackfriars site was "inappropriate" for the two neighbouring buildings, overturning the approval of previous mayor Ken Livingstone.
"I am of the view that the applications are unacceptable due to the inappropriateness of the sites for very tall buildings and the impact on the view from the footbridge in St James' Park," Clement wrote. "Individually both towers would have an adverse impact on the view. Cumulatively, this impact would be greater."
This follows Johnson's previous acceptance of towers in Doon Street and Queen's Market in Newham. Will please traditionalists. Will enrage the architects. More here.
