While my ideal summer table decor consists of gorgeous heirloom pieces and statement serveware, the reality of hosting a big event is that I just don't have enough to go around, which is where compostable tableware comes in. Not only does it mean you can cater for large gatherings in style (with my picks, there's no need to compromise on aesthetics), but it saves on the dreaded washing up, and you can be safe in the knowledge that single-use can also be sustainable.
So, in an effort to throw more eco-friendly gatherings and elevate my summer picnic essentials, I've been on the hunt for biodegradable pieces to pair with my outdoor-safe tableware. I was concerned that my search would lead me to plain brown plates that wouldn't work with my summer garden party themes – but to my surprise, there are plenty of options out there, which are far more chic than you might expect.
From bamboo to sugarcane, here are the sustainable materials to look for and my favorite compostable finds, which will ensure you're stocked up for hosting without worrying about the environmental impact.
Bamboo tableware

Bamboo is a brilliant material that's both renewable and compostable. Many eco-friendly tableware items are made from a bamboo blend, usually containing other natural materials like sugarcane. You'll find bamboo dinnerware sturdy but lightweight, eliminating the need for any plastic coatings or toxic dyes.
Bagasse (sugar cane) tableware

Bagasse is the material that's left behind after sugar cane stalks are pressed. Since it's an agricultural waste product, it requires no extra energy or water to produce, and it leaves no toxic residues after being composted. Like bamboo, it's durable and leakproof.
Palm leaf tableware

Palm leaf tableware is made using fallen palm fronds which are washed, pressed and sterilized. There are no chemicals or toxins involved in the process, and the material biodegrades in around 60 days. (It's also leak-resistant and oven- and microwave-safe.)

I adore the Chinoiserie-style toile print on these plates – you'd never know that they were made entirely from bamboo fiber and cornstarch. They can even be used again and are dishwasher safe, unlike your best China.
While glass and stainless steel straws are great eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, they're not always practical for large groups. These bamboo straws however will up your eco creds at cocktail hour and look spot on in a Pina Colada.
Sophistiplate is my go-to for elegant and eco-friendly partyware; these pretty plates are made from a blend of bamboo, wood fiber, and sugar cane, which helps to make them sturdy and reliable.
Who says 100% bamboo plates can't look the part? I admit that these might seem slightly out of place next to your finest china, but the decorative edges will really elevate a rustic tablescape.
Crafted from both bamboo and bagasse (and finished using water-based ink dyes), these compostable dinner plates are eco-friendly without sacrificing on style. I'm obsessed with the pastel hues and the subtle decoration.
These handy cutlery and napkin sets come pre-rolled for your guests to grab and go. The bamboo cutlery is smooth and splinter-free and the cloth-like napkins are compostable.
These porcelain-look plates are made from 100% sugar fiber and they're safe for use with both hot and cold foods. You can even pop them in the microwave to re-heat leftovers.
The natural wood grain look on these palm leaf plates is so appealing for outdoor or tropical settings. And the square shape adds a little variety to the table.
These Repurpose compostable glasses look elegant but are actually made from corn and other plant-based materials and are durable so won't crush easily in your hand.
Sustainable tableware isn't just ideal for large parties; it's also perfect if you're wondering what kind of kit to bring to a picnic. My friends will certainly be impressed when I reveal that these gorgeous plates are made from 100% natural materials.
