This stinking 6ft pile of rubbish was dumped at an Oldham beauty spot

It is a pretty disgusting sight.

This stinking, 6ft high, pile of rubbish was carelessly fly tipped in the middle of an Oldham beauty spot.

Broken chairs, sofa cushions and other trash just dumped at the side of the road without a care.

The mess was discovered on Crime Lane in Daisy Nook Country Park on Tuesday - right next to a sign that said 'no fly tipping or dumping'.

And it was pretty hard to miss from the main road - especially on a relatively sunny, spring day.

Many posted their disgust on social media about the mess which covered the entire width of the road, leaving some walkers and horse riders unable to pass.

The fly tipped waste was quickly reported and cleaned up by Oldham Council later that day.

It's understood evidence was found in the pile which could help environmental officers to catch those responsible.

Helen Lockwood, deputy chief executive, People and Place at Oldham Council, warned if caught they would be prosecuted.

She added: "We were alerted to this flytipping incident and attended the scene on April 16.

"Our Environmental Services team have cleared the site. They also retrieved evidence which may help us to identify who was responsible, and we would not hesitate to prosecute.

"It’s a disgrace that some people think they can get away with dumping rubbish and litter on our streets and blighting the area, and we have a zero tolerance approach to this crime.

"This year we’ve employed extra enforcement officers who have delivered hundreds of prosecutions and Fixed Penalty Notices as a deterrent.

"We’ve invested an extra £600,000 a year in our street cleaning and are working with some brilliant community groups to tackle this problem."

Residents are urged to report flytipping to the council.

This can be done via Oldham Council's website at  https://www.oldham.gov.uk/flytipping.
