This sneaky illegal trick to cut Uber Eats driver's car insurance lands him in court

An Uber Eats driver's bid to get cheaper car insurance backfired and landed him in court.

Wing Kit Wong's premiums were slashed after he told an insurance firm he lived with his parents in Doncaster.

But North Tyneside Magistrates' Court heard he was rumbled after it emerged he was actually living in Walker .

Prosecutor Claire Irving said: "He also failed to disclose that he had 11 points on his licence.

"He did this to reduce the premiums on his insurance."

Wong, of Belmont Street, pleaded guilty to making a false statement to obtain insurance.

The court heard his premiums plunged from £1,900 to £1,300 after claiming he wasn't living in Newcaste's East End.

Paul Kennedy, defending, told the court: "I'm not sure he was sophisticated enough to know the difference with the address."

The court heard Wong earns up to £500-a-week as an Uber Eats driver when students are living in Newcastle.

However, he and his partner were getting by on his £100-a-week salary due to the summer holidays.

Mr Kennedy said Wong's actions were perhaps as a resort of his sky-high insurance premiums being "a bit of a stretch".

"They money (at Uber Eats) is not great," added the solicitor.

"He tried to navigate around and save himself a bit of money - but he's got caught."

Magistrates fined Wong £83 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £30 charge.
