This simple trick helps children safely hold sparklers

Soon, fireworks will be lighting up skies as we head towards Bonfire Night.

It is marked on November 5 every year in the UK, where of course it is celebrated with fireworks and bonfires.

Little ones will be told all about the dangers of fireworks, and wearing gloves as little ones hold sparklers is a well-known safety measure for Bonfire Night.

But there is a nifty trick for children holding sparklers that could make it safer, and give parents peace of mind.

The Facebook group Family days. Tried & tested shared an idea which sees sparklers stuck into carrots so children can hold them safely.

They say: "It's great for little hands that need something chunky to hold and easier for them to grip."

Since the post was published, it's been shared 46,000 times.

Some thought it was a great idea, while some weren't so sure.

Bonfire night - how to stay safe

Jennifer Hart said: "We did this last year for them it was brill."

Dagmar Boer has used potatoes or oranges.. "More round and more chunky," they said.

Beverley Cross thought it was an "awesome idea" adding "I'm a grown up and still scared of holding them!"

James Hoj said: "Also not a great idea, when the sparkler has burnt out, what's the first thing the kid does, pull the burnt end out!"

Tony Gray said: "Sounds a good idea, but parents need to be aware that their kids do not just discard the carrot and sparkler wire on the ground, many animals eat carrots, from pet dogs to many wild animals, the wire could be fatal!"

Lisa Cowling added: "Its a good idea till your 4 year old take a the sparkler out of the carrot to get a new one before u have chance to stop them they r burnt my little girl fort she was helping last year no permanent damage done but could have been a lot worse just a heads up to all mums."
