The scene outside Hillsborough ahead of Sheffield Wednesday v Swansea City as floods cause chaos

Sheffield Wednesday's clash with Swansea City has been thrown into doubt as rising flood waters continue to cause chaos around the city.

Heavy rain in the early hours of Thursday morning saw the river Don come close to bursting its banks, affecting several areas, including Hillsborough.

Pictures circulating on social media showed the shocking scene outside Sheffield Wednesday's stadium, which sits right next to the Don, while nearby Penistone Road is also affected.

The conditions have caused severe disruption across the city, with shoppers at the local Meadowhall shopping centre left stranded following the closure of the slipway on the M1 at junction 34.

Local transport services are also affected.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning, but there has not been any word yet on whether Saturday's game will be affected, although there are fears that the worst of the weather could be yet to come.

Councillor Mark Jones told the BBC : "The rain is going to get worse again tonight.

"We have a full emergency service running and we are monitoring the situation as best we can but we are inundated.

"It's all hands on deck, everything is being activated and mobilised but the fire service and council contractors are working at full capacity."

A spokesperson for Sheffield Wednesday could not be reached for comment.
