This road will be closed for two weeks from today for metrobus works

Motorists have been warned of more delays as the next stage of work continues on Gipsy Patch Lane.

The junction of Station Road with Gipsy Patch Lane will be closed to all vehicles for two weeks from today (Monday, January 13).

It is part of the work to demolish the current railway bridge and construct a new one to accommodate a new metrobus route.

This temporary closure is to enable Network Rail and their contractors Alun Griffiths to continue with piling work before the new railway bridge is moved into place this spring.

The piling work is needed for the foundations of the replacement bridge.

The current bridge creates a traffic bottleneck causing queues along the road, but it is hoped the new bridge will relieve this pinch point and allow enough space for two buses to pass each other.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to access Station Road via Gipsy Patch Lane during the closure.

A diversion route for vehicles, to reach Station Road via Clay Lane and Little Stoke Lane, will be in operation and will be fully signposted throughout the junction closure.

Access to businesses to the southern end of Station Road will involve travelling under a footbridge with a height restriction of 4.2 metres.

But all businesses on and near Station Road, including Patchway Train Station and the Sort It Centre, will be open as normal.

What is Metrobus

In June last year Gipsy Patch Lane was closed for four weeks so BT could carry out preparation work to divert underground utilities before the scheme begins.

And while traffic problems seemed to have been kept to a minimum, businesses in the area say they suffered losses as a result of the closure, with one firm claiming sales were down by £17,000.

This two-week closure marks the start of disruption along this stretch of road this year.

An eight-month closure of Gipsy Patch Lane is due to take place in 2020 to enable the replacement of the railway bridge.
